What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry means different things to each of those who join. For some, it’s about making new friends and acquaintances. For others, it’s about being able to help deserving causes – making a contribution to family and for society. But for many, it is an enjoyable hobby.
Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisation. It teaches self-knowledge through participation in a progression of ceremonies. Members are expected to be of high moral standing and are encouraged to speak openly about Freemasonry.
There are plenty of misconceptions about Freemasonry, especially among younger men. The truth is much simpler. If you are looking for friendship, personal development and the chance to be part of something meaningful, Freemasonry might be exactly what you are looking for. Joining is much easier than most people think. You do not need to be invited. You do not need to know someone already inside. If you are a good man, over 18, and interested in becoming a better version of yourself while helping others, you can simply ask. Freemasonry brings together men from all walks of life. Some join to meet new people. Others join to learn, develop confidence, or give something back to their community. What most discover is a strong sense of brotherhood, shared values and lifelong friendships. It is also a lot more social than people expect. Lodge meetings are important, but so are the conversations, laughs and friendships that happen around them. If you have ever been curious about Freemasonry, this is your sign to find out more.
What happens at a Lodge meeting?
The meeting, which like those of other groups, are open only to members, is normally in two parts. First, there are normal administrative procedures such as:
- Minutes of the previous meeting
- Proposing and balloting for new members
- Discussing and voting on the annual accounts
- Masonic news and correspondence
- News about charitable work
Second, there are the ceremonies for:
- Admitting new members
- The annual installation of the Master of the Lodge and his officers
Are you interested in becoming a Freemason?
To become a Freemason, a man must be at least 18 years old, be decent, law-abiding and believe in a Supreme Being. When you become a Freemason you will join a Lodge. Most Lodges meet four to six times a year and usually on the same day of the week. Lodges also run a regular Lodge of Instruction evening, usually once a week, where members can learn more about Freemasonry and forge new friendships.
If you are considering joining Freemasonry then it is also right that you should want to know what we do.
